Is Tulane Safe? Campus Crime Data for Parents

Tulane's 2026 crime report lists 4 aggravated assaults, 10 rapes and 26 stalking reports on the uptown campus in 2025, and no murders. Here are the full numbers, what they leave out, and what Tulane provides at night.

Is Tulane University safe? Tulane's own crime report is the place to start. In 2025 it lists no murders on the uptown campus, 4 aggravated assaults on campus and 8 more at non-campus property, which includes houses owned by student organizations, along with 10 reported rapes and 26 stalking reports.

What do Tulane's campus crime statistics show?

Tulane's campus crime statistics show no murders and no on-campus robberies on the uptown campus in 2025, with 4 aggravated assaults, 8 burglaries, 14 motor vehicle thefts, 10 rapes and 26 stalking reports. The counts come from Tulane's 2026 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, required by the federal Clery Act and dated September 2026, which covers 2023 to 2025.

| Uptown campus, on-campus column | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | |---|---|---|---| | Murder | 0 | 0 | 0 | | Robbery | 0 | 2 | 0 | | Aggravated assault | 3 | 5 | 4 | | Burglary | 6 | 5 | 8 | | Motor vehicle theft | 4 | 8 | 14 | | Rape | 19 | 17 | 10 | | Fondling | 3 | 10 | 7 | | Stalking | 12 | 24 | 26 | | Dating violence | 3 | 1 | 1 | | Domestic violence | 1 | 6 | 3 | | Arson | 0 | 0 | 0 |

Three details from the same report:

  • Most sexual offenses were reported in student housing. In 2025, 7 of the 10 rapes and 5 of the 7 fondling reports were in residence halls.
  • Scooters count as vehicles. E-scooter, e-bike, e-skateboard and golf cart thefts "will be considered a motor vehicle theft."
  • No hate crimes in 2024 or 2025. The report lists none on the uptown campus in those years, after 13 in 2023, 10 of them intimidation.

The report is linked from TUPD's Clery Act page.

What do Tulane's crime numbers leave out?

Tulane's crime numbers leave out crimes in private homes and businesses near campus. The 2026 report says its statistics "do not include crimes that occur in privately owned homes or businesses within or adjacent to the campus boundaries," so off-campus apartments and the restaurants and bars on nearby streets fall outside the table.

Two other columns in the report fill in part of that picture:

  • Non-campus property. Houses owned by recognized student organizations count here. In 2025 that column held 8 aggravated assaults, 4 motor vehicle thefts, 2 burglaries and 12 hazing reports. 2025 was the first year hazing was counted.
  • Public property. Streets and sidewalks next to campus. In 2025 it held 1 robbery and 1 stalking report.

For the wider neighborhood, TUPD's Daily Crime and Fire Log lists incidents reported to TUPD in its patrol area over the last 60 days, updated within two business days.

TUPD also publishes its own totals. Tulane News reported a 32% drop in total crimes from 2023 to 2024 across its campuses and a 19% drop on the uptown campus in 2024 (Tulane News, March 2025). That is a different count from the Clery table, so compare like with like.

Who patrols Tulane's campus and the streets around it?

The Tulane University Police Department (TUPD) patrols Tulane's campus and the streets around it 24 hours a day. Its officers are commissioned police with "the same authority as municipal police officers in the State of Louisiana," and they carry firearms, per the 2026 report.

  • Size. "Over 80 sworn police officers," per TUPD's quick facts, as of October 2026.
  • Accreditation. TUPD was first accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) on November 21, 2015 (message from the chief).
  • Patrol area. "Tulane officers patrol regularly in the uptown area bordered by Jefferson, South Claiborne, South Carrollton, Broadway Street, Leake Avenue and Saint Charles Avenue," under an agreement with the City of New Orleans (2026 report).
  • A station on Greek row. A TUPD station at 1036 Broadway Street opened on July 24, 2023, staffed 24 hours a day (Tulane News, July 2023).
  • Blue light phones. The uptown campus has 82, and each dials TUPD directly.

Save two numbers before the visit: TUPD emergency, (504) 865-5911, and non-emergency, (504) 865-5381 (TUPD contact page).

How do Tulane students get around safely at night?

To get around safely at night, Tulane students can call a free TUPD escort at any hour, book an on-demand ride until 10 p.m., or ride the Green Line shuttle between the uptown and downtown campuses until 11 p.m. on weekdays, per Tulane's shuttle and police pages as of October 2026.

  • Officer escort, 24 hours. "A free service provided by TUPD officers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and up-to one mile off of campus." Call (504) 865-5381 (safety escorts).
  • On-demand rides until 10 p.m. Since July 1, 2025, students book rides in the Passio Go app. From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. it covers Uptown between Napoleon Avenue, S. Carrollton Avenue, Magazine Street and Fontainebleau Drive. Drop-offs are at Tulane property, a residence, a grocery store or a pharmacy, and rides "to and from businesses" are outside the service (Tulane shuttles).
  • Shuttles. The Green Line between the uptown and downtown campuses runs until 11 p.m. during semesters, and the weekend Red Line until 9:45 p.m.
  • The safety app. Students are enrolled in TU Alerts automatically, and the Everbridge app adds a "virtual escort," per the 2026 report.

After 10 p.m., the only university service inside Uptown that Tulane's current pages describe is the 24-hour TUPD escort.

Where students go at night: Eliana, our Campus Lead at Tulane, says on Broadway "the main bar is also right there," and Freret Street, with more restaurants, is "about a 20 minute walk" east. Our Uptown New Orleans guide maps both streets.

TUPD's FAQ page, undated but still live in October 2026, lists Freret, Willow, Calhoun, Broadway and Maple streets as "heavily patrolled pedestrian corridors" and encourages students to walk within them.

What security do Tulane's residence halls have?

Tulane's residence halls have card access, doors locked around the clock and overnight guards. Per the 2026 report, "all residence halls operate under a computerized Access Control and Security Monitoring System," and ID cards are coded so only a hall's own residents can get in.

  • Doors. "All exterior doors are locked 24 hours a day."
  • Guards. "TUPD has contracted security guards assigned to each residence hall between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.," and TUPD officers patrol each campus 24 hours a day.
  • Fire. The report's 2025 fire log lists two small kitchen fires in uptown halls, with no injuries.
  • Power. Tulane says every uptown residence hall now has a full-building generator (Tulane News, May 2026).

What happens at Tulane when a hurricane threatens?

When a hurricane threatens New Orleans, Tulane announces whether the university will shelter in place or evacuate, and a university-declared evacuation requires every student to carry out their personal evacuation plan (Tulane emergency preparedness, as of October 2026). Tulane puts the season's peak at August through October.

How an evacuation works, per Tulane's preparedness pages and the 2026 report:

  1. Ahead of any storm, each student fills out a personal evacuation plan in the Gibson portal. Tulane's preparedness office advises plans that do not rely on bus or rail, with airline tickets bought before going to the airport.
  2. When Tulane declares an evacuation, "no students or employees are permitted to shelter or remain on any of Tulane's campuses except designated critical personnel." Public Safety runs a shuttle so students can make their connections, including to Louis Armstrong International Airport.
  3. Students still on campus at closure "will be transported to a shelter at a safe distance from campus" and brought back when campus reopens.
  4. After the storm, students wait for the Alert Line and the emergency website before returning. Tulane "will not provide transportation from the airport back to campus after the storm."

Families get storm updates when their student adds family emails in the Gibson portal, or through Tulane's sign-up form for families. The alert line is 1.877.862.8080.

To see campus and the streets around it with a current student, a private Uptown New Orleans tour is $150 for your family, 60 to 90 minutes, any day of the week.

Frequently asked questions

Is the area around Tulane safe?

TUPD regularly patrols the area around Tulane, bounded by Jefferson Avenue, South Claiborne Avenue, South Carrollton Avenue, Broadway Street, Leake Avenue and St. Charles Avenue, and Tulane's admission office says the uptown campus "is within one of the safest areas of the city." Tulane's federal crime table leaves out crimes in private homes and businesses nearby, so TUPD's Daily Crime and Fire Log, listing incidents reported to TUPD in its patrol area over the last 60 days, is the place to check recent ones.

What is the Tulane police phone number?

The Tulane police phone number for emergencies is (504) 865-5911, and the non-emergency line, which also arranges free officer escorts, is (504) 865-5381, per TUPD's contact page as of October 2026. On the uptown campus, any of the 82 blue light phones dials TUPD directly.

How can Tulane parents get safety alerts?

Tulane parents can get two kinds of alerts. Emergency updates come when a student adds family emails in the Gibson portal, or through a sign-up form. That list "is not used for crimes such as robbery, car jacking or assault," per Tulane's emergency preparedness office, so parents who want those notices subscribe to TUPD's crime alerts separately.
