What is the Vista in Columbia, SC?
The Vista in Columbia, SC, also called the Congaree Vista, is the district between Assembly Street and the Congaree River, west of the State House and the University of South Carolina. Historic Columbia gives those two edges, and many place the north and south edges at Taylor and Blossom Streets.
Experience Columbia says the Vista spans 48 blocks, with many buildings from the early 1900s. It grew on rail lines and "transportation, storage and light manufacturing," in Historic Columbia's words, and artists helped lead its revival starting in the 1980s.
Two buildings still show that past: the Adluh Flour mill at 804 Gervais Street, finished in 1920, which Historic Columbia calls the last of 42 similar mills that once ran in South Carolina, and the old Seaboard Air Line Railroad passenger depot at 1200 Lincoln Street.
The Congaree Vista Guild counts nearly a dozen galleries, and its 2026 visitor guide calls the Vista one of only 13 cultural districts in the state.
Max Kaufmann, our Campus Lead in Columbia and a sophomore at the University of South Carolina, described it on a call in September: "Vista, there's a lot of bars there, and that's where all your main restaurants are."
