UT Knoxville Visit Dates to Plan Around, 2026-27

Visit UT Knoxville on a weekday while classes are in session, and plan around home football weekends, when hotels drop UT's visitor rates. Here are the 2026-27 dates.

The UT Knoxville visit dates to plan around in 2026-27 are the last two home football Saturdays, Homecoming week, Thanksgiving, finals and spring break. The best window is a weekday while classes are in session. Below are this year's dates from UT's own calendars, plus what a game weekend is like from Grant Thornham, who leads our private, student-led Knoxville tours.

When is the best time to visit UT Knoxville?

The best time to visit UT Knoxville is a weekday while classes are in session, because that is when the official tours run and when students are on campus. In spring 2027, classes meet from January 19 to May 5. Admitted students have their own spring events, covered in what to see once you're admitted.

UT's official visit is a 30-minute admissions session and a 90-minute walking tour, held Monday to Friday. Saturday tours are rare. The fall 2026 calendar listed two, on November 14 and December 5 at 10 a.m., and both were full when we checked on October 15. A full tour puts you on a waitlist, and every visitor has to register through the official campus tours page before arriving.

Three ways to get the most from one trip:

  • Pick a weekday in a week with no break, so the official tour and a normal class day line up.
  • Register for the official tour first, then build the rest of the day around its time slot.
  • Add the town in the afternoon or evening. Our private tour runs seven days a week, early or late, so it fits after the official visit or on a weekend the official calendar doesn't cover.

Which Knoxville weekends should we avoid or plan around?

The Knoxville weekends to plan around are home football Saturdays, because hotels black out UT's visitor rates on "all home Tennessee football weekends," according to UT's Welcome to Knoxville page.

Two home games are left in the 2026 season, per The Daily Beacon's schedule:

  • Saturday, November 7: Kentucky, the Homecoming game.
  • Saturday, November 21: LSU, the last home game of the year.

The 2027 home schedule will set next fall's list, so check it before booking an autumn visit.

A game weekend can still work for a visit. Book a hotel the moment you pick the date, and plan the campus walk for Friday or Sunday. The rest of the year, the quiet weeks to skip are the breaks and exam weeks on the registrar's calendar.

When is UT Knoxville Homecoming in 2026?

UT Knoxville Homecoming in 2026 runs November 1 to 7 and ends with the Homecoming football game against Kentucky at Neyland Stadium on Saturday, November 7.

The week's public events, from UT's Homecoming page:

  • Homecoming kick-off: Monday, November 2, 2 to 4 p.m., at McClung Tower and Plaza, where students dye the Europa and Bull fountain orange.
  • Rocky Top Rally: Wednesday, November 4, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 21st Mortgage Plaza.
  • Homecoming parade: Friday, November 6, 4 p.m., at Torchbearer Plaza, open to the Knoxville and campus community.

Homecoming is also a home football weekend, so the hotel blackout applies. A family that wants the parade and the energy should book now. A family that wants a quiet look at campus should pick another week.

When do classes start and end at UT Knoxville in 2026-27?

Classes at UT Knoxville in 2026-27 started Monday, August 17, 2026, end the fall on Tuesday, December 1, and run January 19 to May 5, 2027 in spring, according to the registrar's 2026-27 academic calendar.

The days with no regular classes, worth skipping for a visit:

  • Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
  • Thanksgiving recess, November 25 to 27, 2026.
  • Fall study day and exams, December 2 to 9, 2026.
  • Winter break and the winter mini-term, through January 15, 2027.
  • Spring break, March 8 to 12, 2027, and spring recess, March 25 to 26.
  • Spring study day and exams, May 6 to 13, 2027.

Commencement ceremonies are listed as TBD. The official degree dates are December 12, 2026 and May 15, 2027.

Fall classes start right after sorority and fraternity recruitment, which runs the week before. If rush is part of your student's plan, read our guide to Greek life and rush at UT Knoxville.

What is Knoxville like on a UT game day?

A UT game day fills Knoxville around Neyland Stadium, which seats 101,915 after the renovation finished before the 2022 season, according to UT Athletics.

Fans come by water too. The Vol Navy, fans who arrive by boat on the Tennessee River for home games, started in 1962 with announcer George Mooney and reaches about 350 boats for big games, per Volopedia, UT Libraries' encyclopedia.

Grant's version is shorter. His family came in for the Alabama game on October 17, 2026, the weekend Tennessee won and students stormed the field. "It might have been the best weekend of my entire life, I cannot lie," he said two days later.

That is the case for a game-weekend visit: you see the town at its loudest, on the weekends hotels drop UT's visitor rates. For the visit day itself, our post on things to do in Knoxville has a one-day plan, from the official visit in the morning to dinner on Market Square.

Whatever weekend you pick, a private tour runs seven days a week, early or late, around your visit: $150 for your family, 60 to 90 minutes.
