When to Visit IU: 2026-27 Dates to Plan Around
The best time to visit IU is a weekday while classes run: August 24 to December 12, 2026, or January 11 to May 1, 2027. Book football and Little 500 weekends early.
The best time to visit IU is a weekday while classes are in session, and the 2026-27 school year gives you two windows: August 24 to December 12, 2026, and January 11 to May 1, 2027. Book early around home football, Little 500 and graduation. Our private, student-led tours of Bloomington run seven days a week, so the tour fits around any date on this page.
When is the best time to visit IU?
The best time to visit IU is a weekday during the semester, when campus is at its busiest. IU's official academic calendar puts fall 2026 classes from Monday, August 24 to Saturday, December 12, and spring 2027 classes from Monday, January 11 to Saturday, May 1 (read October 2026).
Weekdays also give you the most official options. IU's Office of Admissions runs tours Monday to Saturday, and the IU Visitor Information Center adds an hour-long tour on select Sundays at 1 p.m. The visitor center itself is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Weekends work too, with a trade. Saturday parking is free in all IU Bloomington lots, and the visitor center opens on select weekends: in fall 2026, October 31 to November 1 and November 7 to 8 are still ahead, with Saturday hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday hours of noon to 3 p.m.
Book the admissions visit first, since it runs on IU's schedule, then build the rest of the day around it. Our one-day IU visit plan puts the stops in order, with parking and hotels.
Which weekends should we book early for an IU visit?
The weekends to book early for an IU visit in 2026-27 are the home football games, Little 500 and spring commencement. Visit Bloomington warns that "hotels sell out quickly for big events like football games, graduation, and the Little 500."
- Saturday, November 14, 2026: Southern California at Memorial Stadium.
- Saturday, November 28, 2026: Purdue at Memorial Stadium, during IU's Thanksgiving break.
- Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24, 2027: Little 500 at Bill Armstrong Stadium, the women's race on Friday and the men's race on Saturday.
- Early May 2027: spring commencement. IU hadn't posted the 2027 ceremony date as of October 2026. Spring finals end Friday, May 7.
The football dates come from the 2026 schedule published by WFIU, IU's public radio station (WFIU, January 2026). Check kickoff times on IU's athletics site before you book flights.
If your dates are flexible, visit the weekend before or after one of these, when hotels are easier to find.

Is January a good time to visit IU?
Yes, January is a good time to visit IU once spring classes start on Monday, January 11, 2027. Before that, the IU Visitor Information Center is closed for winter break, December 19 to January 11.
January is also sorority recruitment season. Brady Hawk, our Campus Lead and a current IU student, says sororities don't rush until spring, and women hear little about it until it's close. Panhellenic primary recruitment runs over the first few weeks of January (IU Panhellenic Association). If your student is thinking about rushing, ask about recruitment timing on the visit.
January is when admitted students start hearing from IU, too. Invitations to Red Carpet Days, IU's events for admitted students, go out starting in January, for days in February, March and April.
Our guide to IU sorority recruitment explains the rounds in order.
Can we visit IU over a break or in the summer?
Yes, you can visit IU over a break or in the summer, though you'll see fewer students and some offices close. The IU Visitor Information Center closes November 21 to 29 for Thanksgiving and December 19 to January 11 for winter break.
During Thanksgiving break and spring break, March 14 to 21, 2027, IU holds no classes, so expect a quiet campus.
Summer works for a first look. IU's admissions office says it offers visit options all year long, and fall 2027 classes begin on Monday, August 23, 2027, so a late-August visit catches campus filling back up.
Whatever the date, a private tour with a current IU student runs seven days a week, early or late, for $150 for your family.
