Admitted to Auburn? What to See Before You Commit

Admitted to Auburn? Plan on Admitted Student Day in spring, the May 1 deposit, a housing application from November, and a walk through the town before you commit.

Auburn's Admitted Student Day is a spring event by invitation, and it was Friday, April 3, in 2026. Before you commit, see the town as well as campus: where students rent, Old Row, the Sorority Village and downtown. This guide has the deadlines, the housing steps and what to ask. Our private Auburn tours show the off-campus side with a current student.

When is Admitted Student Day at Auburn?

Admitted Student Day at Auburn runs in the spring, by invitation to admitted students. For the fall 2026 class it was Friday, April 3, 2026, with check-in from 8:30 to 9 a.m., per the Admitted Student Day page.

The day offers the chance to "meet students and faculty, explore academics, get a feel for campus life and enjoy lunch," with a shuttle from parking. As of October 2026 no date had been posted for students entering in fall 2027. Watch for the invitation, and call admissions at 334-844-3540 or email webadms@auburn.edu with questions.

Two deadlines frame the spring, per the freshman checklist:

  • May 1: the $250 enrollment deposit or Intent to Enroll form, for summer and fall. It is non-refundable.
  • June 1: Camp War Eagle registration, open once the deposit is in.

So a family that visits in March or April still has time to decide.

What should admitted students see at Auburn before committing?

Admitted students should see four places at Auburn before committing, and all of them sit off the standard campus walk. Walk times are from Toomer's Drugs, by our map measurement in October 2026.

  • The downtown strip. Right across from Toomer's Corner. Riley, our Auburn Campus Lead, calls it "our whole downtown strip area where all like the social life and like restaurants and boutiques are at."
  • Where upperclassmen rent. Keep walking past the library, about 9 minutes, or toward the business buildings, and Riley says "you'll see some off campus" housing.
  • Old Row. Fraternity houses close to campus. "One's right by the library and one's right across," she says.
  • The Sorority Village. The halls beside Neville Arena, about 17 minutes on foot, where each of the 18 sororities has a chapter room.

Dorms take a separate booking. "Housing tours are not a part of the general campus tour," per admissions, and University Housing runs hall tours on weekdays. Our one-day Auburn visit plan fits the official tour and the town into one day.

How does freshman housing work at Auburn?

Freshman housing at Auburn works by application, with a timeslot and no guarantee. "Housing is not guaranteed to all freshmen as Auburn University does not have a live on requirement," says the new-applicant housing page, and there is "routinely" a standby list. The steps for 2027-28, as of September 2026:

  1. Apply in your timeslot. The application opens by lottery timeslot from November 4, 2026, with a $100 non-refundable fee.
  2. Pay the enrollment deposit. The $250 admissions deposit comes first. "Your enrollment deposit is not a deposit for housing," admissions says.
  3. Pick a room April 1 to 23, 2027. Apply by April 21 to reach room selection.
  4. Pay the $200 assignment prepayment by May 1, 2027, which is also the cancellation deadline. Manual assignments start May 6.

Apply early. University Housing holds about 5,200 students, and the standby list is the reason families ask about off-campus options in freshman year. Our guide to Auburn dorms for freshmen lists each hall and its 2027-28 rate.

Do Auburn freshmen have to live on campus?

No, Auburn freshmen do not have to live on campus. Auburn has no live-on requirement, per University Housing, and in fall 2025, 41% of first-years lived off campus or commuted, according to the 2025-26 Common Data Set.

Riley skipped the dorms herself. "We don't have to live on campus freshman year, so I was like a dorm sounds not fun, but everyone else enjoyed it," she told us in October 2026. She has lived off campus since her first year. The other 59% of first-years lived in university housing, so the dorm is still the usual choice.

For a freshman thinking about an apartment, the timing matters. University Housing says Auburn students pick the next year's housing during the current year, so leases move early. Our guide to Auburn off-campus housing covers lease types and the city's rule for houses.

What should we ask a current Auburn student?

Ask a current Auburn student the questions that admissions materials do not answer. These are the ones families ask Riley most, plus three we would add:

  • What is the bar scene like?
  • Is it safe, and where do students walk at night?
  • Which areas would you not recommend living in?
  • When did you sign your sophomore lease? University Housing says students choose next year's housing during the current year.
  • What happens to freshmen on the housing standby list?
  • Did you rush, and was it worth it? Panhellenic recruitment runs the week before fall classes. See our guide to Auburn sororities and rush.

A private tour of Auburn is $150 for your family, 60 to 90 minutes, with a current student who can answer them. TourCollegeTowns is independent and not affiliated with Auburn University.
