How does sorority and fraternity recruitment work at Auburn?
Sorority and fraternity recruitment at Auburn works in two different ways: sororities run one formal week in August, and fraternities recruit through the summer. The Panhellenic steps for fall 2026, from Join Panhellenic:
- Register from June 1. The form asks for resume information, transcripts, a photo, two written responses and a video. It cannot be saved halfway, so set aside one sitting. The fee is $165, billed to the student account.
- Move in August 4 to 6. New members arrive by 5 p.m. on August 6 for Kickoff.
- Go through the rounds. Ice Water Teas, then Philanthropy, Sisterhood and Preference rounds over eight days.
- Bid Day. In 2026 it was August 15 at Neville Arena, two days before classes started.
Greek Life tells registrants to "be prepared to dedicate their week" to recruitment.
Fraternities work differently. "Summer recruitment is the primary period in which students join IFC fraternities," per Join IFC. Students register through ChapterBuilder, meet chapters at casual events, and can accept a bid over the summer. Rec Day, Open House and Kickoff follow at the start of fall.
When is rush at Auburn?
Rush at Auburn runs in early August for sororities and from late spring through August for fraternities, based on the 2026 schedule.
- Panhellenic, fall 2026: registration opened June 1, Kickoff was August 6, and Bid Day was August 15. Classes began August 17.
- IFC, 2026: registration opened May 1, bidding ran June 5 to August 23, and the fall kickoff was August 18, with formal recruitment August 19 to 20.
As of October 2026, Greek Life had not posted the 2027 dates for either council, and the IFC page said the spring 2027 schedule was not yet released. Expect the same shape next year, then confirm on the council pages once they update. The dates matter for the move-in plan: a sorority recruit moved in August 4 to 6 in 2026, more than a week before classes began on August 17.
How much does Greek life at Auburn cost?
Greek life at Auburn costs a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a semester, depending on the council and the chapter. Auburn Greek Life's Financial Resources page gives these estimated ranges per semester, as of October 2026:
- Panhellenic sororities: $710 to $1,300 as a new member, then $497 to $988 once initiated.
- IFC fraternities: $325 to $3,800 as a new member, then $600 to $3,600 once initiated.
On top of chapter dues, every Greek student pays a $40 Greek Fee each semester, and every Panhellenic member pays a $105 facility fee each semester. The one-time fees are $165 to register for sorority recruitment and $70 to accept an IFC bid.
Greek Life says dues cover national fees, chapter operations and social events, and that meal plans, photos, gifts and apparel can add more. The first semester usually costs the most. Have your student ask each chapter about payment plans before Bid Day.
Where are Old Row, New Row and the Sorority Village?
Old Row, New Row and the Sorority Village are the three places Greek life lives at Auburn, and you can see all three from public sidewalks.
- Old Row is West Magnolia Avenue, close to campus. Riley, our Auburn Campus Lead, puts it this way: "one's right by the library and one's right across."
- New Row is Lem Morrison Drive. Riley calls it "further out where you have to drive."
- The Sorority Village is Magnolia, Leischuck and Oak halls beside Neville Arena, about a 17-minute walk from Toomer's Corner by our map measurement.
Greek Life's chapter facility map says 21 of the 28 IFC fraternities have a house, owned by alumni or national house corporations. Sororities have none. Each of the 18 chapters has a chapter room in the Village with a hall above it that sleeps about 40 members.
Our guides stay on the public sidewalk at every Greek stop and never walk onto a chapter's lot. The rest of downtown is in our guide to things to do in Auburn.
What is Auburn rush like for a family new to Greek life?
Auburn rush for a family new to Greek life is a lot to learn fast, and Riley knows it firsthand.
- She went through it with no family history. "No one in my family did it. And I was so lost," Riley told us in October 2026.
- She shows the buildings. When a family says their daughter or son wants to rush, she makes sure to stop by a house or a chapter room "so they kind of see what it looks like."
- Sororities have no houses. "We just have little like chapter rooms, and then we have like a hall of like dorm rooms," she says.
- Students want those halls. Asked whether members want to live in the sorority halls, Riley said, "Yeah, a lot of people did."
Seeing Old Row and the Village once makes the August schedule much easier to picture.
What Greek life rules should Auburn parents know?
The Greek life rules Auburn parents should know cover hazing, alcohol at recruitment, and who can join.
- Hazing is banned on and off campus. Alabama law has a "Duty to Report" clause, and "To be aware of hazing and failing to report it is illegal in Alabama," per Greek Life's hazing prevention page. Report anonymously at aub.ie/ReportIt.
- IFC recruitment is alcohol-free. Every recruitment event falls under that IFC policy.
- Members must be full-time undergraduates. Path to the Plains and Auburn First students cannot join an IFC fraternity, and each chapter sets its own GPA rules.
- No recommendation letters are needed for a sorority bid, per Panhellenic.
- The first semester is the busiest. After initiation, members attend weekly meetings and required philanthropy, service and recruitment events.
A private tour of Auburn with a current student is $150 for your family, 60 to 90 minutes, and can include Old Row and the Village from the sidewalk. TourCollegeTowns is independent and not affiliated with Auburn University.
